The native land of poppy (Papaver somniferum) is Greece and the Middle East. In Europe poppy’s medical and narcotic properties were known since ancient times. Later, Arabian traders and the expansion of Islam in East promoted its popularization in Persia, Southeast Asia and India.

There are different sorts of poppy: in Europe black ones are more known, in India - yellow, in Turkey - brown. Poppy is used dried. The taste of seeds is spicy, sweetish, slightly reminding nuts. Seeds of poppy do not have narcotic action.

Poppy seeds are actively used in bakers industry.

As auxiliary substance broth of seeds is used to calm down a dental and ear pain.
