Walnut

The native land of this nut - is not Greece, as would be possible to think, but Middle of Asia and Asia Minor. First, who has brought these nuts to Russia about ten centuries ago, were the Greek merchants. Actual name also come from there. They are also named Voloshskie (region in Russia) nuts. In an antiquity these nuts were considered panacea from all illnesses. The Greeks named them imperial acorn and presented to each other as a gift with the kindest wishes. In the Roman Empire they were an obligatory dish on all wedding ceremonies. In Caucasus and in Moldova there was a legend, that this tree has to be planted after the birth of the child, it gave to his body strength, and to soul - force and belief. Today walnut is cultivated in moderate climate practically in all territory of Europe.

Walnut (Juglans regia) is a powerful 30-meter tree of nut family. The duration of its life is about 500 years, but dendrologists know also older trees. First fructification occurs after May flowering in 5-10th year of plant’s life. In each tree the average volume of nuts is up to 400 kg. The fruits of these trees - stone-fruits – based on calorie content and assimilability do not concede too many products of an animal origin (calorie content in beef, for example, is 7 times lower). Walnuts are perfect addition to meat dishes, porridge, cheeses, sauces and confectionery products. They are especially rich with vitamins in maturity stage. The vitamin C, contained in them, is 8 times higher than the same parameter for a currant and in 50 times more than in citrus.

As an auxiliary substance these nuts are used in case of anaemia, dermatitis, colds increased content of cholesterol, nervous frustration and gastrointestinal tract diseases.
