Filbert, or Lombard nut, and also its wild growing relative hazel (Corylus) -is true nut king. From immemorial times the magic properties were added to this small nuts - they served as guardians from evil power, from mice and even lightning of thunderbolt were the essential part of the maiden guessing, but, mainly they rescued from poor harvest years and helped to find the way for lost travellers.
The native land of this nut is Asia Minor and Caucasus, it was distributed from here to south-east, and then to north of Europe. In 17-18 centuries the filbert was delivered to America. Nut-tree is blossoming in March - April, its flowers are of different sexes, that is why the fruits are formed only from female flowers, very similar to a bud, with gorgeous-red tassels - stigmas.
